Personal statement

I joined Strathclyde in September 2005. I manage the design and delivery of research-integrated teaching in Spanish Language at Honours and masters level in the subject area of Spanish, with specialism in discourse analysis, written production and debate skills. My learning and teaching methodology is based on and informed by my pedagogical skillset and my current research in modern foreign languages (MFL) pedagogy and language policy and strategy.

My research interests cover two different areas in Hispanic Studies: Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) pedagogy and Latin American Cultural Studies. In Modern Foreign Languages, I am interested in innovative approaches to teaching (structured debates in the classroom to foster critical thinking, oral interaction in the ELE classroom and collaborative and reflective learning to improve written production skills and it spreads to language policy and strategy. In the area of Latin American Cultural studies, my interests lie in electoral reform in Mexico and social movements, revolution, dictatorship in Latin America through literature and film. My multidisciplinary background in comparative politics and history in Latin America and Media and Political Business Communication studies also allows provides me with an extent of potential research opportunities.

For several years prior to the COVID pandemic, the Modern Languages department organised the LATE (Language and teaching) seminars. In 20222/2023, I am a core member of the organising committee of the Teaching and Scholarship seminars in Humanities. The first guest in December 2022 was Dr Amparo of the Women’s legacy project, a European project creating a depository of resources of women’s work in art and literature. In 2023, the speakers , mostly internal, will present workshops and gave seminars on topics ranging from the technology of interactive lectures to pedagogical reflections on different types of feedback.
